In 1966, in his book Les mots et les choses, Michel Foucault defined the concept of 'Convenientia' as the things that are so close that they border one another. They touch, their fringes mixing so that their boundaries coincide, and where one ends the other begins. Dirk Zoete treats photo, performance, reality, imagination, drawing, line and plane as equivelant. Never does one drown out the other: instead they support one another, melting together to create changing readings of the meanings they generate. It is a paradoxical connection, uniting harmony and disharmony, a harmonious discord forming a balanced unity.
The artist himself once told me, 'In my mind there is no big difference between a drawing and an installation or sculpture. The differences between my drawings, models, sculptures and installations lie elsewhere, in the performance.' [from Careful Dressage, txt Inge Braeckman]
