This encyclopedia offers a splendid and wildly recommendable insight in the world of Croxhapox, combining trivial pursuit and serious matter. The entries have been mostly written in Dutch but quite a few have been translated. If you want the Dutch original, change your choice of language and go to the 'encyclopedie'.
Second permanent location. Croxhapox resides there from Autumn 1994 till Summer 2000. Kristel De Buck, owner of the house till 2005, goes with the idea to change the basement into an exhibition space. Here Michaël Borremans has his first solo projects. Later, from teh end of 1997, the first floor is also included in the exhibition activities. Aannemersstraat forks with Wolterslaan and leads to Destelbergenstraat. While Wolterslaan had still postal code 9000 Gent, Aannemersstraat was in Sint-Amandsberg (9040). The neighbourhood, known as Heirnis, it used to be an estate - apart from a few sparse relics no signs of it can be found - reaches from Dendermondsesteenweg to the inner city ringroad and is side by side with Macharius, the present (2003- ...) crox quarter.
From 1993 till 1999 van has his workspace in the large and sunny conservatory which is used for the first and the last time as a crox location in June 2000, crox 104, De Eerste 10. From 2002 till 2005 we had Space Is The Place in the basement, an initiative of Merlyn Paridaen.
10.000. In 2005 ontvangen we van de Vlaamse Overheid een projectsubsidie van 10.000 euro.
1.500. Op 21 januari 2008, enkele dagen na een druk bijgewoonde opening, wordt het geldkistje gestolen. De buit bedraagt circa 1.500 euro.
800. Van crox-boek 8, Black A Garden for St. John's Millbrook (2008) van Philippe Vandenberg, worden 800 exemplaren gedrukt. De reguliere oplage, met uitzondering van de boekprojecten van Hans Theys en Dirk Zoete, is beduidend lager.
500. Van Over Vorm [crox-boek nr 14] en Careful Dressage [nr 17] worden 500 exemplaren gedrukt.
408. Met 408 bladzijden is Anoniem eerste helft 21ste eeuw (2013) het dikste crox-boek. Over Vorm van Hans Theys (2009) heeft 400 bladzijden.
350. De reguliere oplage is 350.
210. Basics 1 (2003), waaraan 25 kunstenaars deelnemen, het project vindt plaats in wat later de bar- en mediaruimte wordt, totaliseert 210 tekeningen.
190. Op zondag 21 juni 2015 hebben we 190 bezoekers.
94. Het buurtproject Open deuren (1996) neemt 94 locaties. Locatie 94, Galerie Gérald, is een wandelende tentoonstellingsruimte.
90. aan de sequel van Basics #2 (2006) nemen 90 kunstenaars deel,

Frituur Roeland (2014). Het frietkot van Roeland tijdens Hard Gelag, een project van gastcurator Laurens Mariën met werk van Yann Bronder, Ingeborg Deglein en Bert Huyghe. En: Roeland weet hoe het moet. Friet als gesmolten goud.
Jean & Margriet. Van midden jaren zeventig tot de eeuwwisseling the best in town. Het frituurst is vlak bij de eerste locatie van croxhapox, aan Sint-Jacobs (1990-1991). Overgenomen door de Turkse jongens van Sympa.

"Singing Potatoes' bestaat uit acht aardappelen die in de vorm van een cirkel op een sokkel liggen met daarnaast een geluidsversterker en een 'reverb'-effektpedaal. Bij het aanraken van deze aardappelen is er een 'orgel' geluid hoorbaar. Iedere aardappel staat voor een toon. Acht aardappelen vormen zo de gehele westerse toonladder, bestaande uit één octaaf plus de hoge 'do'. Het menselijke lichaam bevat een zekere hoeveelheid elektriciteit die via de membraanpermeabiliteit van de huid, b.v. de vingertoppen, een signaal opwekken dat door een aardappel kan geleiden. De aardappel dient hier enkel als organische interface om zo het elektronische geluidscircuit binnenin te triggeren. Tekst: Steven Tevels.

From 1997 till 2003 an advising commitee. Members were (in no specific order) Michaël Borremans (1997-1999), Maria Blondeel (1995), Johan De Wilde, Marijke Bontinck (1997-1999), Guido De Bruyn and Sjoerd Paridaen.
The advising board was ended at the end of 2003. From than on, croxhapox vzw consists of a Board of Directors and an Executive Commitee. (>wijziging statuten). All other members constitute the General Assembly.
A new advisory board is put in place in 2008, with seperate team for the artistic and the financial/organisational stuff. The teams have their own modus operandi. The financial/organisational group meets regularly to clear up specific problems but the artistic team is more informal. Other issues are tackled by the web team and the editing group.

TV2 kunstprogramma (BRT) waarin croxhapox 2 keer aan bod komt, telkens in 1996. De eerste bijdrage behandelt de instalramen van Phill Niblock, Jens Brand en Zjuul >Devens (januari 1996), de tweede schetst een sfeerbeeld van Open Deuren (september-oktober 1996). De regie is telkens in handen van Jan Blondeel. >Kunstzaken >Televisie.
crox 17 - Copy Art project I (1991). De eerste editie van het Copy Art project is geen copy art in de eigenlijke zin van het woord op 1 enkele bijdrage na, die van de Duitse mailart kunstenaar Jurgen O. Olbrich. Hij is de enige van de 16 kunstenaars die aan de eerste editie deelnemen die het medium fotocopy op een correcte manier inschat: het werk is volledig vervaardigd met en door een fotokopieerapparaat. De andere bijdragen zijn reproducties van tekeningen, foto's en collages. De werken worden als affiche in het Gentse straatbeeld verspreid.
De tweede editie (1992) staat wel in het teken van fotocopy art.
Crox 19 (december 1991), Gent cultuurstad geen haatstad. Meteen na Zwarte Zondag besluit het crox-team tot een antiracistische affiche-campagne. Medewerking van plusminus 40 culturele instellingen. De affiche wordt gedrukt op 10.000 exemplaren, die in een mum van tijd de deur uit zijn. Ook het Gentse politiekorps verdeelt een paar honderd exemplaren. Als gevolg van die campagne wordt het crox-team later betrokken bij een plaatselijk initiatief maar het enige uitzicht hier is oeverloze discussies over onduidelijke en vaak ook zinloze strategieën. Na een maand of zo haakt het crox-team af.
AL >ARMEE LEGER. crox 162-crox 163, januari 2006. Kunstenaarscollectief uit Antwerpen, met o.a. Christophe Engels, Wouter Feyaerts, Bas Decaluwe, Tim Van Ham en Thomas Campaert. Produceren een affiche op 500 exemplaren en in twee formaten. De affiche, met AL-logo, toont hoe twee legers dwars door elkaar heen stappen.
THE FINAL SPEECH (crox 147, september 2005), Adriaan >Verwée. Affiche met de skyline van Hollywood anno 40. Hetzelfde beeld domineert de gelijknamige videofilm. Stefaan >Dheedene ontwerpt de notariële affiche voor crox 108: Ambassade van de Predemocratische Republiek (oktober 2003) en brengt ook een affiche in, drukwerk en multiple, tijdens zijn tweede solo project, A Manual (2005).
BASICS 2. Het ontwerp voor editie 1 (2005) is van de hand van Samir >Boudia. De affiche van de sequel van BASICS 2 (2006) wordt ontworpen door directie en leerkrachten van DKO Oudenaarde./
Foutjes in de prepress zorgen er voor dat de eerste en enige affiche waarmee crox een kwartaalprogramma aankondigt (november 2004>februari 2005) niet verspreid kan worden. Liever geen affiche dan een foute affiche. Vanaf januari 2005 spelen we in het crox-programma vaak zo kort op de bal dat dit soort affiches, met het programma van bijvoorbeeld een half jaar of een kwartaal, totaal zinloos wordt.
Voor de affiche van EN PASSANT (1991) wordt een foto van Edwin >Carels gebruikt. Tevens de eerste keer dat we een gedrukte affiche hebben. Van maart 1990 tot mei 1991 is het >van Heirseele die de affiches aanmaakt, met fotokopie, meestal niet veel meer dan 150 exemplaren.
Tijdens LINEART 1990 is er een straatcampagne met de slogan wij staan niet op lineart.
In zelfde periode is er ook een campagne om de naam van de vereniging te promoten: kunstidee te Gent.
1. Hoeveel zou je kunnen vragen voor een werk van 1 x 1 cm? Met parameter 7 = 0,7 euro per vierkante centimeter: 0,7 euro. Met zelfde parameter kost een werk van 71 x 51cm 2.534,7 euro. Met parameter 23 wordt het 83.283 euro. Het zogeheten topwerk, waarmee doorgaans alleen de marktwaarde van het werk bedoeld wordt, niet wat het zonder die marktwaarde betekent, heeft parameters vanaf 200. Een werkje van 71 x 51cm aan parameter 255 bijvoorbeeld gaat voor het niet eens zo gekke bedrag van 901.355 euro. Met zelfde parameter zou het werkje van 1 x 1cm op de kop af 255 euro kosten.
Iemand vertelde me dat een kunstenaar, iemand met wie hij een nauwe band had gehad, voor z'n kleinere werk relatief gesproken méér vroeg dan voor de grotere doeken. Parameters immers zijn relatief.
2. De corridor in het fabriekspand waar croxhapox sinds 2003 resideert, heeft een lengte van exact 21 meter. Die afstand kan je nooit 1 keer afleggen,(1) omdat je als je het pand verlaten wil altijd eerst naar de hall terug moet. Tot het eind van de 21 meter lange corridor stappen, komt ipso facto op 42 meter. Tijdens een reguliere werkdag legt de artistiek directeur, om het meest voor de hand liggende voorbeeld als voorbeeld te nemen, deze afstand heen en terug tussen begin en eind en eind en begin van de corridor gemiddeld 10 keer af. Heen en weer stappend tussen begin en eind van de corridor legt zij aldus een afstand van 420 meter af. Laten we aannemen dat zij dit elke dag doet, wat tijdens het 2015 project van Meesterklas Luca, om maar één voorbeeld te nemen, het meest plausibele gemiddelde geeft van het vermoedelijke aantal keer heen en weer tussen eind en begin. Na verloop van zeven dagen heeft zij aldus 3 kilometer afgelegd. Niet voor eenduidend waar maar op z'n minst als plausibel gegeven en virtueel als aanvaardbaar in te schatten betekent dit dat betrokkene, aangenomen dat hij of zij het hele jaar door heen en weer stapt in de 21 meter lange corridor, jaarlijks 150 kilometer aflegt en dit hoogstens door zich tussen eind- en beginpunt van de 21 meter lange corridor heen en weer te bewegen. Correlatief kan daar het zich heen en weer bewegen tussen een niet te noemen aantal punten in de vele zalen van het fabriekspand aan toegevoegd worden, afstand met soms geen andere betekenis dan een te verwaarlozen ingreep, het nemen van foto's, het bedrijvig heen en weer stappen tussen de bedrijvigheid van anderen die net zo goed bedrijvig heen en weer stappen, soms hoogstens het genot van het stappen van een denkbeeldig (a) naar een net zo denkbeeldig (b), het kluwen van een net zo reëele als denkbeeldige afstand, die net om die reden het makkelijkst blijkt uit de afmeting die de corridor biedt: 21 meter van eind naar begin en dan terug.
3. Het begrip borgesbibliotheek geeft aan hoe het zit met de werkelijke afmetingen van een werk. Ik kan me het volledige werk van Borges makkelijk aanschaffen voor het ronde bedrag van 100 euro. Voor hoogstens één werk van Luc Tuymans heb ik 1.000.000 euro te betalen. Het ontegensprekelijk belangrijkere of op z'n minst interessantere oeuvre van Borges kan ik bovendien ook doornemen terwijl ik me van het eindproduct van de logisch gesproken noodzakelijke maar voorts niet zo belangrijke lunch ontlast. Met een Tuymans kan ik niet naar achter gaan, met Borges wel. Ik kan met Woolf onder de dekens kruipen, ondanks het kwalijke vooruitzicht dat ik reeds dommel voor zij ook maar iets gezegd had kunnen hebben, met Tuymans niet. Met alle grootheden van de wereldliteratuur kruip ik spontaan in bed. Slaap je, schatje? vraag ik. Nee hoor, zeggen ze. Meerdere boekdelen van Cortazar hebben me alles bij elkaar niet eens 50 euro gekost, minder dan een beurt met een vranke meid, onderbetaald bovendien, in een buurt waar ik met Cortazar niet komen moet. Klaarkomen op Cortazar doe ik niettemin wanneer ik daar zin in heb. Met beeldende kunst, zodra het de grenzen van het weefsel waarin u en ik en Borges en Cortazar bestaan, is er een andere norm. Om het met Tuymans te doen heb ik een miljoen neer te tellen en dat doe ik natuurlijk niet. Met een reeds gebruikte Cortazar betaal ik hoogstens 4 euro. Wat me bevalt aan die Borgesbibliotheek is de transparantie van het traject. Als wat ik wil zich helemaal achterin de Borgesbibliotheek zou bevinden, waar voor- en achterin nooit de onzin van het niet te betalen bedrag hebben, kan ik ook nog bij Duras, Toussaint, Dostojewski en Perec langsgaan, zonder onder de vloermat te belanden.

Speciaal voor de presentatie van JDD wordt een smalle gang ontworpen. De projectcluster heeft ook nog presentaties van Sarah Westphal (DE) en Dianna Frid (CA). Tijdens de openingsavond schuift Dabramski mee in als 4de man van The Singing Painters. Concert met een rits nieuwe songs. JDD voegt een turbulente mix van sound en noise toe.
Schuift ook mee in tijdens een van de betere TSP-performances, in Voorkamer Lier. Het is tijdens dit concert dat JDD de muzikale kwaliteiten van George W Bush introduceert.

On 13 February there is a concert with Marieke Berendsen, violin, improvising to the work of Hallveig Agustsdottir. Another concert follows on 20 February, this time with Hallveig herself on prepared piano and 'live drawing'.
A fascinating moment during opening night on Saturday 29 January 2011: a solo by Peter Jacquemyn (bass) in the room where Hallveig's work hangs on the wall, right in front of the dark charcoal improvisations.
'HA: When I started with photography during my studies in Ghent I read a lot about the American composer John Cage and I got very inspired by his music, his writings and philosophy and his visual work. What mostly influenced the first images was his proposition that music is everywhere. According to Cage, everything we hear, all sounds and noises, are music. There is no real silence either. He mentions for example that he was going into a sound-proof studio to experience absolute silence but was surprised to hear the sounds of his own body. That was very touching, so I wanted to continue in the same vein but in a visual manner. I got the idea that everything we see can be art.
HVC: So you notice images in your environment, in the streets, that inspire you to become art?
HA: Yes, in the street, in an empty room, in a derelict building, the floor of my workspace, at home, anywhere, everywhere, we only need to keep our eyes open.'

The project by Michiel Alberts (NL), the performer, and Wouter Messchendorp (NL), technical assistence, is based on a text from Samuel Beckett and takes place in the larger frame of the IETM festival which happens in 2007 in Ghent. Michiel and Wouter sleep in the cube during the festival. The performance happens concurrently with a presentation of Philippe Vandenberg.

from the catalogue Ik ben gefascineerd door het collectieve aura van een publiek schrijn. Dit soort plek heeft geen auteur. Enkel de initiële vorm werd door iemand gemaakt. Wat er later gebeurde is oncontroleerbaar. De spontane interventies en rituelen van voorbijgangers maken een onuitputtelijk visueel en gemeenschappelijk verhaal van de plek. 'Alles behalve de memel' is een schrijn voor alle onzichtbare, onvolmaakte en toch kostbare dingen, levend of dood, die ons overal en altijd omringen. Deze wezens, afgezien van hoe gewoon of zelfs waardeloos ze mogen blijken, hebben verborgen krachten die ons leiden naar een wereld van fantasie en magie. Dit schrijn nodigt je uit om even stil te staan en rond te kijken op zoek naar wat je mooi en verrijkend vindt, net hier, op deze plek en op dit moment. Wanneer je het vindt, kan je iets toevoegen aan het schrijn (in welke vorm dan ook). Dit groeiend schrijn kan een verhaal worden van wat we het meest appreciëren deze dagen. Want wanneer we praten over folklore vergeten we soms dat we hier en nu onze eigen volksverhalen scheppen, nieuwe tradities en rituelen die we op hun beurt doorgeven.

vraag en antwoord Who or what connects in your work?
With my work I aim to create a frame for conversation. It is an invitation to observe the place and actively express your own thoughts and impressions. Respect for what is already there and negotiation of what kind of personal contribution light be suitable here is a gentle call to participate in a dialog.
What is specific or local?
Specific or local for me are all the hidden treasures that are invisible at first sight but appear as out of nowhere if you look closely. In the bush next to Korsele I discovered a so called ghost plant or ghost pipe. It doesn't contain chlorophyl in itself and can only survive with the help of certain fungi to attach to the roots and get food from photosynthetic trees. None of these separate agencies could survive without each other or grow just like that somewhere else.
What is participation for you?
Participation is letting go of control. To accept and trust that ideas, contributions, ways of thinking or working of others are as interesting, valuable and necessary as those of your own. It's not always easy but very beautiful when it happens.
What dialogue do you have with your/the environment?
Very silent one. I try to listen, I often fail.
Please, could you share a note you wrote in the past few months?
Recently, in collaboration with two other artists, we started volunteering at an elderly home. After the first day there I wrote in my diary two sentences that are still growing in my mind. 'When mind forgets, body remembers.'

'Persoon die iem. in alles bijstaat of vervangt, onafscheidelijk metgezel (in ‚t bijzonder echtgenoot of echtgenote)‘. Deze definitie komt uit de Dikke van Dale.
De alter ego’s van Joris Van der Borght zijn persoonlijke instrumenten. Dr Al.If, NGIP, W.O.K en NCNP hebben elk een gedefinieerde en welomlijnde identiteit. W.O.K, het vroegste alter ego van Van der Borght, staat voor een inhoudelijk en experimenteel onderzoek van de actuele scene. Zodra dit onderzoek afgerond is, een onderzoek dat eind jaren tachtig begint, verschijnen andere alter ego’s ten tonele. Van der Borght werkt vanaf dan alleen nog via alter ego’s. Vaak gaat het om concepten en structuren waar andere kunstenaars bij betrokken geraken. Van der Borght zelf, als naam, blijft volledig op de achtergrond. Zijn eerste en voorlopig enige project als J. Van der Borght is overigens een crox-project: Sacre Bordel (crox 130-crox 131, januari 2005). Alle andere projecten zijn het werk van een van de vele alter ego’s.
De mysterieuze meneer Smith, het actiefste alter ego van Peter Morrens, is met woorden bezig. Smith is geen poeet en is wel een poeet, hij is een meester in het opengooien van gemeenplaatsen zonder daar veel meer voor nodig te hebben dan 1 enkele opmerking.
van grossiert in alter ego's. Midden jaren tachtig is er Ilya Raache. De meest opvallende publicaties van Raache zijn die in Wolfsmond, Deus Ex Machina en Diogenes, alles eind jaren tachtig. Midden jaren negentig ontstaan Krystzof Denek (CZ) en Thomas Karz (D). Denek, een malcontente en roodharige bioloog die met Die Rote Armee Fraktion dweept, komt in Nicaragua om het leven. Er is weinig bekend over de omstandigheden. Thomas Karz (D) is een leerling van Stockhausen en Berio. Midden jaren zeventig komt hij in aanraking met het werk van Joseph Beuys. Resideert drie keer gedurende een min of meer lange periode in Gent en komt met enige regelmaat in het programma van croxhapox aan bod. In 1986 participeert hij in Antichambre, de tegenvoet van Chambres d'Amis. Zijn eerste crox-project is een instalraam, 'Kausale Zusammenhange' (juni 1996). Over andere alter ego's, de Italiaanse kunstenares Ottavia Maria Otti en Brian Konn, een transsexuele albino met Viëtnamese roots, is minder bekend.
Hastings en Jeevers, resp. Thomas Broadbent en Hans van Heirseele, ontmoeten elkaar tijdens een touring trip naar London en Oxford. Later is er Frips, sinds circa 2003 een vaste waarde in het mailart network. Paridada, alias Sjoerd Paridaen, is er sinds eind jaren zeventig mee vervlochten.

470. NOETICS. Productie met presentaties van Sacha Eckes, Bob Van de Putte, Jeroen Frateur en Dimitris Ameladiotis. September 2014. Zou aan het Kask een Erasmus afgewerkt hebben. Studeerde in Londen aan de Chelsea Art School. Yannick Franck introduceert Dimitris. Ze hadden elkaar eerst in Izmir ontmoet, later in Boston. Het crox in situ werk is untitled. A flow of more than 30 objects. Says: the in situ sculptures have a philosophical dimension, as most of the work I make. Which indeed makes it different from the work by Jeroen Frateur. They focus on the same materials, rubbish, found particles of junk, but there's doubtless something wild in the way Dimitris interpretes the whole thing. In connection to philosophy he points the Cynic movement. Maanden op voorhand hadden we een goedkope vlucht voor hem weten te vinden, Thessaloniki Charleroi. Ik pik hem op in Charleroi airport. Pas ter hoogte van Brussel beseft Dimitris opeens dat hij niet op een vlucht Thessaloniki Brussel zat. Het regent. Later kammen we de Gentse haven uit op zoek naar de rotzooi waar hij bij voorkeur mee werkt. In Thessaloniki wandelt hij vaak kilometers ver langs de kust en verzamelt er de junk die hij voor z'n werk gebruikt. Overal in de straten van Thessaloniki vindt hij de materialen die hij nodig heeft. Het werken met gevonden materialen begon nochtans niet in Thessaloniki, daar begon hij pas mee toen hij in Chelsea studeerde.

Collins Cobuild heeft het over a situation where nobody seems to pay attention to any rule or law, en Cambridge maakt er het volgende van: lack of organization and control, esp. in society because of an absence or failure of government.
In De Anarchistische Bankier brengt Fernando Pessoa een extract van fundamentele anarchie te berde, de oorspronkelijke anarchie, een anarchie die op veel punten afwijkt van bovenvermelde lexiconografische quota. Het meest fundamentele anarchistische principe is totale vrijheid.
Totale vrijheid - wat o.a. tijdens het brainbox project in 2006 met succes uitgeprobeerd wordt - genereert een solide en quasi totaal verantwoordelijksgevoel. Zonder de impuls om totale vrijheid optimaal te benutten ontaardt het uiteraard in chaos en wanorde en dan wordt het gauw wat Collins Cobuild stipuleert: nobody accepts any rule or law.
Anarchie is het simpele principe dat alles mogelijk is tot het tegendeel bewezen wordt. Het is een summum van orde omdat het als principe alles binnen die orde aanvaardt. Anarchie wordt meestal ingeschat als ordeloos (zie Collins Cobuild) - in werkelijkheid is het als principe ordelijker dan de utilaristische systemen waarmee we te kampen hebben.

I read this phrase from 'The Theatre of Cruelty (First Manifesto)', published in the 1932 Nouvelle Revue Française, while thinking about the work of Dirk Zoete one rainy afternoon in August with the windows open. Carels, crox 18 (En Passant/ 1991). Location of the installation window by EC
is Geldmunt 32, the shop window of Avalon. Especially for this project, Edwin
has a package of chrysalises sent from London, hoping they would emerge during
the project. Which doesn’t happen./ One of the contributions to the second
edition of crox 17, the copy art project (1991-1992), is a work by Hainke, a
portrait of the artist as a lepidoptorist. Hainke has two versions, in black
and white for the project properly and in colour for the multiple.
cat A feline in thick strings of paint,
fresh from the tube (crox 93/ Heike Kati Barath)./ Siska and Ollie, till 1995
the pets at Aannemersstraat 54./ Groseille, the white kitten of the neighbours,
is acting in a video by Thomas Bogaert. The movie is a part of Brainbox2 unit
9, a collaboration of Thomas Bogaert,

Romolus Molenbergh. The project version they show in 2008 is a try-out, based on

Peers, crox 120 (hommage). Self-portrait as a hart, carrying Saint-Hubertus’
crucifix on the skull, a common natural phenomenon during autumn walks. A man
or a woman with the antlers of a stag on their head is a recurrent theme in the
work of Carole Vanderlinden (crox 129/ 2004) and Fia Cielen./ Jos Van Meerssche
(crox 160). One of the paintings shows a deer. 'Those are the landscapes where
I used deer.’ says the artist./ For project Verzamelwoede (Oudenaarde 2007) Stief Desmet contributes
a collection of deer heads, titled Collectione di Stief Desmet. The frolics and
dressing up of Frank and Robbert. After their acte de présence in The
Gentlemen's Gentlemen, a project of Brian Getnick and Noe Kidder (April 2008),
two solo projects follow, the first one at the end of 2008, where they as usual
figure as cow and deer, beef and venison. Frank is the bull, Robbert the stag.

one present in the backdrop of the fourth phase of brainbox (crox 188), close to the victim./ In the essay BUT let me tell you about another,
even more curious adventure, text for
the catalogue of the 2006 Zwirner-expo of Michaël Borremans, van
Heirseele brings up the concept of 'homo caniens', the canine human or the
manhound: 'Homo caniens, or doglike man, the dog-man or man-dog, knows only one
truth, his own.' In the same essay the author also quotes from 'Meer kennis van
uw hond', [Know more about your dog] by Jan Van Rheenen./ even more dogs in
NOTES (crox-boek NR 4) by Thomas Böing: dog
and master en dog school./ crox-card NR 8: Dog, a piece by Michaël Borremans from
1998. It represents a toy soldier, face and shoulders effaced by a broad swath
of cadmium red. Red, more precisely cadmium red, is exemplary of all the works
in the second crox solo (crox 93, The Fetish)./ A whippetlike dog of plaster or
clay, one of the contributions of Rik
Soenen to the sequel of Basics 2 (2006). Suzan Smith, daughter of Alan, also
did a dog sculpture , a funny wide-legged pup built from lego bricks./ The
falling dog, a work by Heike Kati Barath, and the Ecuadorian mutt, a photo by
Marc Coene. Both works are part of the series of crox-cards./ Rund [cow] is the
name of the dog of Jelle and Sarah. There is a funny picture of Rund in the
crox-blog. An acte de présence from the mongrel of Paris Hilton in the work of Ada Van Hoorebeke and on top of that the question whether smurfs are animals. In Ada's work smurfs are everywhere. All of the make an appearance. Sure enough smurfs are animals.
duck The
wooden ducks of Jan Janssen and Johnny Michel (crox 18, En Passant/ 1991). Location Foetonhuis in Onderbergen. The
ducklings are placed among other commodities where they are hardly conspicuous
– you have to be an expert to spot the difference.
eagle Cathérine Lommée (October 2008). Haiku and
Skulptur I, two films she made in Czech Rep. The eagle who is
the main character in both movies, is a tame eagle.
elephant Fetish
element in the mail art correspondence between Sjoerd Paridaen and Hans van
Heirseele. Paridaen is the one who introduces the topic. The reference is Olifant The Elephant L'éléphant, title
of a collection of poems by Hans van Heirseele. One of the poems, The Elephant, has been used in 1993 for a
composition for choir and ventriloquist by Lucien Posman. The poem runs as
follows: 'There's an elephant in front of the door. What, an elephant, what? What's
an elephant?' And so forth, anyway, something of the sort. Côte d'Or is massive
proof of the aformentioned proposition.
But, and also mostly: the elephant is a funny animal. This is an
attribute it shares with the monkey and the dog.
fish In
the first guest book (1990-2000) an ansjovy can be found, at the very front. It
was during crox 3, the first solo project of Edwin Carels, that the unfortunate
animal surfaced between the pages. A breughelesque
character, fish in mouth; a narrative work by Dirk Zoete, part of his second
crox solo in 2007.
fly Contribution by Thomas Böing to the
sequel of Basics 2 (2006). During the build-up of this edition, in Abdij
Maagdendale, Alan Smith constructed an in situ work using the dead flies he
comes across./ Jos Van
Meerssche (crox 110, Basics 1): a dead fly sticks to one of the pages of the
drawing book of JVM. / 'die Fliege fliegt und stürzt verrückt', an animated
movie by Steffie Van Cauter has been shown twice in croxhapox, first in 2008, the
next year during the Zennestraat project in Brussels. The fly of the title isn’t

shown in a cupboard. An unforgettable moment: Dirk taking one of the loaves
which explodes into dust in his paws, nothing left over but a paper thin crust.
parrot Yoko, a grey parrot. Till
circa 2007 Yoko is a part of the furniture of the buffet of Ghent Dampoort
railway station. Rumours have it that it has moved to the Baleares. Extra in the

pinguin Thomas Böing, crox 191 (2006). A
series of photo’s of stuffed animal. The animals have been cut away from the
pictures, showing only the hole they left behind. More pinguins in crox-book NR
4: The Fuehrer explains the
evolution to a pinguin.
rabbit The
species is often to be found in the oeuvre of Thomas Böing (crox 73/
crox 191) and Heike Kati Barath (crox 93). Other artists evidently have less
affinity with the rabbit. In the oeuvre of Borremans a dead hare turns up circa 2006. The species furthermore
gives acte de présence in the second installation window of Sjoerd Paridaen and
Erik Lagrain (crox 42, March 1996) and the '9/11 lego-party' by Alan Smith

de opstanding van robot en kunstgalerie croxhapox - Hans van Heirseele is naast musicus en schilder, ook oprichter van de ondertussen opgedoekte kunstgalerie: CROXHAPOX. Samen met vier andere kunstenaars wil hij die in september terug tot leven wekken.
Croxhapox is opgestart in 1990, aan het Beverhoutplein, aldus Hans. In een pand waar alleen maar elektriciteit was en waar je net zo goed kon verongelukken. Een kraakpand eigenlijk, want we hebben nooit huur betaald. De beginperiode van Croxhapox was nogal megalomaan, heroïsch bijna. Zonder geld en na zes maanden al een vzw oprichten. Was Croxhapox een belangrijke galerie? Wij waren een laboratorium van jonge actuele kunst. Meestal brachten we jonge kunstenaars die nog zeer weinig kansen hadden gekregen in het tentoonstellingscircuit. Eind jaren negentig, op het moment dat de galerie veel persaandacht en publiek kreeg, zijn we ermee gestopt. Hadden we toen voortgedaan, dan was Croxhapox nu een ronkende naam geweest. Wat was er dan zo uniek aan? Het snelle tempo waarmee de tentoonstellingen elkaar opvolgden, onder andere, maar vooral onze eigenzinnigheid. Croxhapox was een kunstenaarsinitiatief, geen echte galerie. Wij hebben bijvoorbeeld nooit geld gevraagd aan de kunstenaars. Het systeem waarbij men zijn deuren openzet en aan de kunstenaar zegt 'betaal 40.000 frank en dan kun je bij ons exposeren' is zeer slecht.
In het begin mocht er bij ons niet eens verkocht worden. En als er dan toch kunstenaars stiekem verkochten, kon ik daar echt kwaad over worden. Een beetje gek, maar ik zag dat als een statement. In de jaren tachtig was het circuit in België immers gigantisch commercieel. Later mocht het wel. Maar daar moesten de kunstenaars dan weer niets voor betalen, terwijl andere galeries hun procent vroegen op de verkoopsom. Pas in 1997 hebben we beslist om 20 procent te vragen, wat nog altijd ruim lager lag dan bij andere galeries. Is er vandaag nog nood aan Croxhapox? Er zijn momenteel veel goede galeries in België, maar een initiatief als Croxhapox blijft uniek. Zeno X, de Kunsthal in Loppem, de Lege Ruimte, dat zijn goede galeries, maar met een zeer hoge drempel op vlak van naambekendheid: kunstenaars die er willen exposeren, moeten vaak al iets bewezen hebben. Terwijl er nietveel galeries zijn die zelf iets bewezen hebben en toch nogaltijd openstaan voor jonge kunstenaars. Waarom ging jullie galerie dan dicht, in 2000? Na tien jaar had ik zin om naar Spanje te gaan, om een beetje uit te blazen. De relatie met mijn vriendin was volledig kapot en we woonden nog altijd in hetzelfde huis. Mijn vriendin Kristel heeft het voorzitterschap van mij moeten overnemen terwijl ik in Spanje zat, maar heeft Croxhapox niet zo goed bestuurd. Dat is een van de redenen waarom we voorlopig gestopt zijn. Maar niemand die het haar kwalijk neemt, want ze heeft veel goed betekend voor Croxhapox. Zwarte sneeuw gezien? Financieel hebben we moeten knokken, ja. Op een bepaald moment was er een Duitse kunstenares, Antje Dorn, die ervan uitging dat ik haar werk zou terugbrengen naar Berlijn. Maar ik had geen geld, ik dopte. Dus heb ik een schilderij van mij verkocht en ben ik naar Berlijn gereden. Ze heeft nooit geweten dat ik daarvoor een eigen werk heb moeten verkopen. We hebben ook altijd veel risico's genomen. De laatste tentoonstelling voor ik naar Spanje vertrok, was Marc Coene. Wie was Marc Coene? Iemand die in een fabriek werkt, die op de markt van die rare oude toestelletjes koopt en daarmee in Milaan en overal in Europa foto's maakt. Fantastisch. Maar wie is Marc Coene nu? Niemand. Anderzijds hebben we ook kunstenaars gebracht die net op het punt stonden door te breken. Jan De Cock bijvoorbeeld of Michaël Borremans. In het begin zaten jullie aan het Beverhoutplein, nu in de wijk Macharius-Heirnis. Is dat een goede plek voor een galerie? Er zijn niet veel goede plekken in Gent. Een goede plek is de buurt van het SMAK, waar de Lege Ruimte zit. En waar wij in het begin zaten natuurlijk, de rommelmarkt. De mensen liepen zo van de rommelmarkt in en uit. Nu zitten we in de Lucas Munichstraat, in een lange gang van 8 op bijna 3 meter. Met hoge muren. Het is klein maar het biedt goede mogelijkheden. Een galerie moet niet gigantisch groot zijn. In december plannen wij een groepstentoonstelling met tekeningen van een tiental kunstenaars. Dan kun je bijvoorbeeld een aantal tekeningen boven elkaar hangen, zodat de bezoeker de ene tekening moet opheffen om de andere te zien. Er zijn altijd oplossingen. Wie gaan jullie tonen in de nieuwe galerie? Bij voorkeur jonge kunstenaars. Ik ga bijvoorbeeld naar alle eindejaarstentoonstellingen en de andere leden van het team hebben zo hun contacten. Raphaël Dua is naast kunstenaar ook docent aan de Academie, Ward Denys heeft voor Jan Fabre en Wim Delvoye gewerkt, enzovoort. Maar naast jonge actuele kunst willen we ook af en toe 'highlights' brengen, zoals Dirk Braeckman. Iemand die niet meteen thuishoort bij ons omdat hij al vrij bekend is, maar die wel eennieuw publiek aantrekt en de naambekendheid van Croxhapox verstevigt.

April 2009: Opbouw van een SHcorr mailart presentatie in RC De Ruimte te Ijmuiden. Presentatie van het 12de crox-boek, Majuskel van Johan Joos, in het Poëziecentrum. Installatie van een cijferslot. Een coproductie in Brussel in de Zennestraat: Fortlaan 17, Q-O2, Secondroom, Constant VZW, Josworld, croxhapox en Les Bains Connective. april 2010: Tot 11 april in de zaal voorin Michiel Ceulers (crox 329), in de zaal achterin Nel Aerts (crox 330) en in de kubusruimte een project van Johan Van Roy. De 10de presentatie van Svend Thomsen's TVF Art Archive focust dit keer op Logos: OTHER SOUNDS AT LOGOS. Videodocumenten van performances van onder andere Erwin Stache, Jaap Blonk & Carl Ludwig Hübsch, Horst Rickels, Stephen Froley en Hans-Karsten Roecke. Van 19 tot 21 april een straatproject van de Nederlandse kunstenares Willy Looijen, GETEKENDE DIALOOG. In de zaal achterin repeteren Rudy Lycke (Multimediale Vormgeving) en Lorenzo De Brabandere. RETURN TO A TEMPORARY CALM (crox 333), van Rudy en Lorenzo, wordt twee keer gebracht, op dinsdag 27 en op woensdag 28 april. In de week van maandag 19 tot zondag 25 april twee toonmomenten, 3de bachelor Schilderkunst van resp. KASK en Sint-Lucas. Op donderdag 29 april springt Adam Geczy binnen.
april 2011: De projecten van Markus Willeke (DE), Susanne Kutter (DE) en Harri de Ville lopen tot midden april. In de kubusruimte is een in situ werk van Hannelore Van Dijck. In de Thomsenrumte is een compilatie van documenten die eerder aan bod kwamen: Guillaume Bijl, Dara Birnbaum en Leo Copers. Op 7 april een concertavond van Smeraldina-Rima; Steve Gunn, Every Bolt Running en City Hands. Eind april volgt een periode met residenties: Sandrine Verstraete, Johanna Van Overmeir, Simon Van Parys, Sjoerd van Leeuwen, Joris De Ryck. En een performance van Danae Baert.
Zoals bekend werden niet alleen de rol- en schommelstoel maar ook het ligmeubel uitgevonden door Urk Piw, op een plek die in het Mioceen als Aratakak bekend stond, in het huidige Kirgizië. Aratakak was meer een gebied dan een agglomeratie. Er werd in holen en greppels gewoond en het meubilair, hoewel het voor die tijd geavanceerd was, week grondig af van wat we tegenwoordig in de huiskamer hebben. Hoog in een boom in een vork van takken van een vulkaanuitbarsting genietend werd Urk Piw door een blikemseflits geraakt en vond zo de schommelstoel uit. Le Corbusier worstelde met de techniek. Met het ligmeubel ging Piw een stap verder. Aangezien de dinosaurussen reeds sinds het Jura uitgestorven waren, kon zij zich een wat meer comfortobale houding permitteren. In de wijde omgeving van Aratakak zijn meerdere kuilen aangetroffen die de homo urkpiwens als lig- en/of slaapplaats dienden. In de niet zelden door vulkaanuitbarstingen verstoorde atmosfeer werd het avondprogramma doorgenomen, waarbij het wijfje eerst de zogeheten astrofische sporen aanbracht, en het mannetje aan z'n kloten krabde. Van de homo aratakakasens is bekend dat hij ook fluiten kon.
De Predemocratische Republiek, een archipel van meer dan 300 eilanden in de Golf van Guinea. De eilandengroep is opgedeeld in 8 aparte eilandengroepen: Mbalma-Piere, Njombel, Suza, Perill, Sangmelimo, Kousseri, Nigri-Pez en Doumo. Mbalma-Piere is het meest noordelijke en westelijke, Doumo het meest zuidelijke en oostelijke punt.

Arf Arf at croxhapox, Thursday 22nd. A splendid and extremely exciting performance. /from the crox-box/
Europese tournee van het ex-Australische Arf Arf (Marcus kwam in Europa, Frank bleef in Australië wonen) met eerst croxhapox, dan een plek in Rotterdam, daarna de Beursschouwburg in Brussel en zo Oostwaarts richting Praag. Geïntroduceerd door de Nederlandse performer Toine Horvers. Svend excited on the whole thing. He remembered Arf Arf from a set in Kopenhagen early nineties. In coproduction with SARMA (Brussels).
Marcus introduces Ben Speth. Ben had been on Pitcairn shortly before Marcus and Laura met.
Antwerps kunstenaarscollectief. De leden die in croxhapox aan bod komen (januari 2006) zijn: Christophe Engels, Wouter Feyaerts, Tim Van Ham, Thomas Campaert, Bas Decaluwe. Christophe en Wouter zijn oudstudenten van de 3D-afdeling van de Gentse Hogeschool. Ze maken deel uit van de selectie van Basics 2 (juni 2005) en de sequel van Basics 2 in >Abdij Maagdendale (april 2006). Het crox-project van ARMEE LEGER toont een transparante mix van 5 totaal verschillende werelden, die toch een hecht en overtuigend geheel vormen. Het verschil heeft vooral te maken met technishe aspecten, inhoudelijk zitten de leden van AL op één lijn, of liever, de afzonderlijke lijnen zijn zo met elkaar verweven dat het inderdaad als een geheel overkomt. In werkelijkheid gaat het om 5 werelden die qua rekbaarheid zo van elkaar verschillen dat je het alleen op inhoudelijk vlak over een rode draad kan hebben. >Christophe Engels brengt een reeks digitaal gemanipuleerde foto’s. Tim >Van Ham toont schilderijen die in feite geen schilderijen zijn, het gaat om een samenstelling van beeldfragmenten. Van Bas Decaluwe zijn er 2 video-montages, van >Thomas Campaert een set beeldcollages. Wouter Feyaerts dikt het geheel aan met 7 sculpturen. Fragmenten van dit geheel werden eerder op andere locaties getoond.

The very first
crox activity, Art Machine, March 1990, was a series of small installation-like
interventions done by Hans van Heirseele and Guido De Bruyn; the project had 7
visitors.

February 1990 de first floor of number 7 at Beverhoutplein (a square at
Sint-Jacobs, Gent) is vacant, after Chris Maes has made it uninhabitable in his
typical idiosyncratic and ingenious way.
Hans van Heirseele lives on the second
floor. He and Frank Van den Eeckhout who runs an antiques shop at the ground
floor, they often play billiards together, had been discussing the Ghent art
scene for some time - it rather smelled like a rotten cheese. Hans surveys the
empty room at the first floor. 15 naked bicycle wheels are left in the small
square. He recycles the wheels and takes them up to the empty room. Guido De Bruyn calls at the door, he has been working
on a documentary of a recent theatre piece by Dirk Tanghe. Thus croxhapox takes
off. Hans and Guido start messing about, that goes without saying. Off goes Guido again,
professionally. When Guido calls again, just before midnight, Hans has been
tinkering all evening. In the bare
room there are a number of items one could call the seeds of mini
installations. One of the most striking objects created that night is an egg on
a plinth. On top of the bald eggshell he fixes a of those folding barber’s
knives, his granddads, still razor sharp and with a worn handle. Bruyn and van
Heirseele continue till deep into the night. Everything is of use: small pieces
of wood (Guido uses them to construct a sculpture on the window sill), an
electric drill, an old mirror (reflecting the dangling bicycle wheels) or a
dice that ends up in a flower pot with black earth. Meanwhile the gentlemen
debate about (a) a title for the resulting spectacle and, (b) a name for the entire
happening. They can’t agree on either. Hans posits croxhapox, a >neologism that turned up in former >correspondence.
Guido thinks this is too ridiculous for words. Hans proposes art machine as a
title. Guido grabs the drillgun and threatens. It is late and they have to find a compromise. Hans has painted the text
for a banana I can be easily seduced on one of the walls and Guido finally
admitted croxhapox wasn’t such a bad idea. He is still in doubts about art
machine. Croxhapox opens its doors the next morning. Nothing much happens in Ghent at the time and that is reflected in the
number of visitors: 7 interested connoisseurs visit the event. van Heirseele decides
the time is ripe to continue. 7 visitors for a scene that is only known by
insiders, that’s not bad at all. In this way art machine wins the prize for the
lowest >number of visitors ever. 1 month later (Carels, crox 3) there are a
100.
The title 'artistieke directie' [artistic management] becomes an item on the agenda in 2002. From the end of 2003 till spring 2004 it is a trio: Hans van Heirseele, Raphaël Dua and Ward Denys. Neither Ward nor Raphaël act accordingly, for widely different reasons. / At the very start (March-june 1990) it was Hans van Heirseele. From September 1990 it became a tandem: Hans/Frank (FF), and later, from Summer 1994, Hans and Kristel. Ever since the end of April 2004 the artistic management Croxhapox vzw is back as it started.

Asparragos, a documentary by Laura Zuallaert. It has two versions, the original, edited by Laura, and a shorter one, re-edited by the VRT [public broadcasting organisation in Flemish-speaking Belgium] intended for the lcd-screen viewing audience. The original is an absolute masterpiece. The lcd-screen version in a three penny piece, it is all much faster than necessary or preferable; it all becomes fast food. Even the shorter version is excellent, not to say a masterpiece, but the original does a lightyear, and that is precisely the difference between fastfood and the real thing.

Portugees kunstenaarscollectief. Lissabon. 2012: Pedro Faria van het Lisbonse Atelier Concorde schrijft ons aan met de vraag of we zin hebben om mee te gaan in het HOST project, een internationaal samenwerkingsverband met partnerorganisaties uit Nederland, Portugal, Frankrijk, UK en België. We hebben één week om te beslissen of we willen of niet, in Portugal zitten ze met een deadline. Omdat een brok avontuur altijd wel meegenomen is, gaan we in op de blind date. Gauw komt het bericht dat het HOST project op 60.000 euro EU-funding rekenen kan, later evenwel dat het project toch niet doorgaat omdat het geen steun van de Portugese overheid heeft. Tijdens winter 2013 resideert Laura van in Lissabon, bezoekt er Atelier Concorde en de werkplaatsen van een aantal aan Atelier Concorde gelinkte kunstenaars. In 2014 is er een crox-project met Pedro Faria en Francisca Carvalho, beiden van Atelier Concorde.

Croxhapox veilt voor het leven
Het experimenteel kunstenhuis in Gent verliest vanaf volgend jaar alle subsidies, maar bij de pakken blijven zitten doet het allerminst. De organisatie slaat terug met een veiling in het SMAK. Je kan er werken van Honoré d’O, Dirk Braeckman en Michaël Borremans bemachtigen. Sofie Van Hyfte
“Niet alleen Croxhapox maar ook de Voorkamer in Lier en alle andere kleinere kunstinstellingen in het land die vandaag naast de subsidies gegrepen hebben zijn ronduit essentieel”, stelt SMAK-directeur Philippe Van Cauteren, “Om een gezond kunstenlandschap te vormen is het belangrijk dat instellingen als het SMAK, M KHA, Mu.ZEE of Wiels hand in hand gaan met laagdrempelige plekken zoals Croxhapox. Hun eigenzinnige manier van werken is bewonderenswaardig. Wars van modes en trends, telkens vertrokken vanuit de noden van de kunstenaars. Of dat nu Amerikanen of Antwerpenaren zijn, met naamsbekendheid of niet, maakt niets uit.”
Laura van, artistiek leider bij Croxhapox lijkt allesbehalve teneergeslagen. “Na de befaamde nul van de Vlaamse overheid waren we helemaal niet van plan om te stoppen. We hebben vanaf dag één de energie verlegd in nieuwe avonturen. Er is een onderhoud geweest met stad Gent. We hebben gepraat over zowel infrastructurele als financiële steun. Verder werd ons ook aangeraden naar de Raad van State te stappen. Als laatste stap organiseren we een veiling om ons startkapitaal in 2017 te garanderen. We hebben ‘Crox-kunstenaars’ geïnviteerd om mee te doen. Zij hebben allemaal de overweging gemaakt om ofwel hun werk te schenken ofwel enkel hun productiekosten aan te rekenen. Het overgrote deel, zo een 80%, heeft geschonken, maar wel met de beperking dat als het kunstwerk een bepaald minimumbedrag niet haalt, het dan teruggaat naar de kunstenaar.”
‘Crox-kunstenaars’ Misschien een vaag begrip, maar wie de flyer van de veiling bekijkt ziet een lange lijst aan topnamen, groot en klein, doorgebroken of nog net niet. Croxhapox vormt de belangrijke schakel tussen het atelier en de musea. “Snij die ader af en het landschap zou enkel maar vervlakken”, knikt Van Cauteren “En dat in tijden dat we net zoveel belang hebben aan reliëf. Plekken als Croxhapox zijn noodzakelijk om de vervlakking tegen te gaan en opnieuw de diepte in te duiken.” Frank Merkx (26), helft van het kunstenaarsduo Robbert & Frank, Frank & Robbert zag zijn hele carrière opstarten in Croxhapox.“Als jonkies van nog geen 18, pas begonnen aan het KASK, kregen we een budget van 2000 EUR toegestopt van Laura om er een tentoonstelling te maken en internationale contacten te leggen. Laura had zo een groot vertrouwen in ons dat het wel niet anders moest dan lukken. Nu negen jaar later zijn we met onze werken de wereld aan het afreizen en hebben we onlangs in Londen de tweede prijs gekregen op de prestigieuze Celeste Prize. Het sneeuwbaleffect deed voor ons zijn werk. Onze eerste sneeuwbal is dan ook in Croxhapox gevormd.”
Online veiling
Hoeveel de actie uiteindelijk zal opbrengen, valt nog af te wachten. Naast de veiling in het SMAK zijn er ook plannen om werken online aan te bieden. Hiervoor is Croxhapox nog in onderhandeling met het Amerikaans-Britse veilinghuis Paddle8. “De vestiging in Londen reageerde enthousiast, maar of ze nu al het fiat uit New York hebben, de hoofdzetel, weten we niet. Joris Van der Borght, onze zakelijke leider, heeft de verkoopsprijs van alle werken samen berekend en we komen op ongeveer 90000 EUR. Het is zeer moeilijk om in te schatten wat dat uiteindelijk zal opleveren. Wat we wel zeker weten is dat het een basis zal zijn om in 2017 op een nieuwe plaats op te starten. Stad Gent heeft al een aantal plekken voorgesteld maar er is nog niets definitief beslist.”
“Wij willen allemaal dat croxhapox kan blijven verder functioneren”, besluit Michaël Borremans. “Met de veiling proberen we ook op onze manier een duit in het zakje te doen. Natuurlijk is dat ook wat gevaarlijk. De minister had het ook tegen ons gebruiken om aan te tonen dat subsidies niet overal nodig zijn. We kunnen alleen maar hopen dat het zo ver niet zal komen.” In SMAK zullen er 35 werken te veil worden gesteld. “Fantastische stukken, knikt Laura, “Twee hebbedingetjes van Michael Borremans. Een prachtig stuk van Thomas Bogaert. Ook een verrukkelijk werk van een student aan het HISK, een onbekende naam met enorm veel potentie, William Ludwig Lutgens. Echt een straffe mix.”
De live veiling zal plaatsvinden in het SMAK op zaterdag 17 december 2016 vanaf 19.00u

Augustus 2006: In de cafetaria worden enkele aanpassingen en verbeteringen uitgevoerd. Merlyn Paridaen werkt de hall en de corridor af. De artistiek directeur vertoeft gedurende enige tijd in Edinburgh.
Augustus 2007: subliem concert van Ornette Coleman op Jazz Middelheim. Afspraak met Philippe Vandenberg. Joris installeert een kantoorruimte.
Augustus 2008: prospecties /Lysandre Begijn, Martine Laquiere/ en Ana Vasic met een filmopname in een van de grote zalen. De heren en dames van CCNOA beginnen met de opbouw van een gastproductie.
Augustus 2009: Fran en Bieke repeteren in de grote zaal voorin. van zorgt voor een update van de cultuurdatabank. The Singing Painters oefenen wat voor een concert dat later op de maand in Knokke zal plaatsvinden. Juul Sadée begint met de voorbereidingen van haar solo project. Eind augustus is er een project van van in Hansbeke, bij Nicolas Leus thuis.

506. ARF ARF. 22 October 2015. Performance. txt During October/November the post-Australian sound poetry group Arf Arf will be presenting new work in Europe. The group will explore the combined power of memory and voice to conjure geometric shapes that radiate inwardly, which shrink outwardly- seeking to locate the midpoint between fluidity and tautness to produce harmonic tensions. Disparities and slippages between ‘then’ and ‘now’, language and verbal noise, blind spots and myopic listening will be plundered, extemporized and recast against, or through, various poetical protocols, illegible events and vociferously stretched cadences. Previously the group has presented hundreds of performances, film screenings and other exhibition-like manifestations/initiatives in Australia and Europe. A DVD collection of film works by Arf Arf is currently distributed by Rumpsti Pumsti (Musik) in Berlin. The upcoming tour of Europe will include the launching of two web-publications: Clanguage (Arf Arf ) and Volume SP (Frank Lovece), both are commissioned and presented by Oral Site/ SARMA (Brussels): oralsite.be

a carefully developend basic pattern on which De Wilde sets free time and
memories. Each and everyone of these representations have a strong
autobiographic background. The research into the place of the self is also
expressed in a mail art project in which

Dirk Peers
(1957-2003). The lino-cuts are technically brilliant and well-organized, as
Peers most often made his cuttings using a chessboard-pattern; the images combine
symbolic and ritual elements, decorative patterns and fragments from the work
of Ruth Mentens, his wife. The combination and endless repetition of all these
elements offer a dark and rather esoteric selfconsciousness.
Suenos
oniricos, an installation by Frank Van den Eeckhout, part of and major
contribution to the triptych Selfportraits (crox 16, May 1991), final project
of the first crox-period. FF's contribution is a triptych within the triptych,
each fragment of it a subtle construction basically in white or faded colors
picturing a series of dreams, as
the title suggests.
Hans van
Heirseele (crox 2, crox 27): each painting is (or has the intention to be) a
diary note.
Some of the
confronting and just so often slightly absurd and comical selfportraits of Bart
Baele are part of the BASICS 1 project (crox 110, November-December 2003).
Philippe
Vandenberg's contribution to Open Deuren (Open Doors, crox 51, 1996) is a huge
painting made with blood. For
this series the artist eventually used his own blood.
Other
autobiographic material is found in the work by Ron Huebner, a Canadian born
artist (Vancouver) who spend a decade or two in Amsterdam. He died in Amsterdam
on March 1st 2004, victim of a bike accident. crox 111, the december 2003
window entitled Jewels by Huebner was his last project. Most of the work
of Huebner has a conceptual line-out, apart from the fact that it is amazingly
well-made and quite diverse from a technical point of view. The jewels are a
series of huge diamonds, or replicas rather. Inside each jewel is a sentence.
One is from a New York cab driver, another from a female friend.
Most of the
Liquids series by Karien Vandekerkhove (see crox-card NR 13) tends to be
materialized as autobiographical material, but is not.
In quite a
different way the drawings by Daniël Vandenbrande (crox 7/ June 1990) have no
autobiographical intention at all, but try a different point of view and the
drawings turn out to be a series of distorted autobio-writing.
As an issue
the autobiography is at its largest in BORDERS by CarianaCarianne. Three
editions document her crox projects: Borders (2004, a CD-rom), Dwelling Field
(crox-card NR 35, 2006) and Borders (2006, crox-book NR 3). A confronting
discourse on identity, dividing personality in two entities sharing one
individual.
